"A Powerful Joy is indeed a powerful joy to read!"

Book Review by The Rev. Nigel W.D. Mumford

"A Powerful Joy" is indeed a powerful joy to read! Teaching vignettes and golden nuggets of insider information and wisdom about the healing ministry presented with meaningful strokes of the pen. Fr. Acton teaches through mini homilies that all tie together to rekindle the fire of the passion of the healing ministry. The information enclosed in this small but powerful book is drawn from obvious experience in the trenches of sickness and disease. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found the stories from life experience and the obvious healings that have taken place to be an encouragement.

Fr. Acton reminds us that, "Healing is the 'Normal' of the Kingdom of God. We must learn to have and expect a new normal." He reminds us that this should be a "'Front and center ministry' of the Church." This is one of those books that you start to highlight and then realize that it would be easier to just dip the whole book in yellow die!

Half way through the book Fr. Acton draws out the confrontation between the young David and the giant Philistine. Acton quotes, "David said to Saul, 'Don't let anyone be discouraged. Your servant will go and fight this Philistine!" (I Samuel 17:31). "How can a young boy take on a giant who had been a warrior since his youth?" The analogy drawn upon here is faith. Acton goes on to quote Pastor Bill Johnson, "If you only attempt what is possible, why do you need faith?" I found this part of the book a huge shot in the arm as so many of us tend to limit God. Acton reminds us that "David took the initiative and does not react to the human problem, but gets into God's solution." He writes. "No matter how huge the problem, "God is bigger!" A reminder for all of us that even the small 'David's' the beginner, the pebble, can conquer the giant. So indeed, prayer in such a small package can conquer disease, through faith. No matter how small or insignificant you may think you are.

Personally, I found this book to be a refresher course with many reminders to stay on the trail. I would suggest that every prayer team member read, learn, and inwardly digest its contents. Rectors buy a bunch of Fr. Acton's books and hand them to your prayer team as gifts. Having read the book a few times I put it down and felt the powerful joy and excitement that the Lord is definitely still in the business of healing. Those who are working in the healing ministry would benefit reading this book once a year. Read this book and reap the contents, you will be blessed. Fr. Acton, I hope you are working on your next book.

Healing Winds Conference – Canton, NC
October, 2010
5 CD Set - “Peace Like A River”
$30.00/set + $7.95 shipping & handling

In this CD set, Rev. Josh, as the keynote speaker at the Healing Winds Conference in Canton, NC, covers the topic of finding and living a peaceful existence in God.

Session 1: Not of This World (55 min.)
One of our primary obstacles to growing into our God given calling and gifts is our own doubts about what God can do through us. This teaching helps you see life from a Christ-centered worldview and gives a vision of life where all things are possible to him who believes!

Session 2: A Daring Dominion (58 min.)
One of the most life changing realizations a person can have is that the clear dominion Jesus exercises over illness, nature, demons, sin and death - is a dominion imparted to all who believe in him. This CD offers a window into the possibilities of exercising Jesus’ own dominion in our lives.

Session 3: Persevering Peace (66 min.)
Peace, shalom, in the Bible, implies a kind of flourishing in every area of life. It is not just a static lack of conflict, but a robust and active wholeness. It's not passively found by waiting for it. One must truly "go after it" with their whole being. In Jesus we find a rest and a peace that is powerful, dynamic and active. This CD shares foundational Bible truths on finding and persevering in peace.

Session 4: The Offense Wins the Game (64 min.)
The phases in our spiritual life are in constant motion and creation with God. Rev. Josh speaks on issues of spiritual warfare and victory that the Lord gives us and how God works with us to mold us into the person he wants us to be.

Session 5: Like a River (54 min.)
Who is steering your ship? There are Christians looking to earn affirmation and access to the Kingdom when it’s already paid for. Are you on a treadmill to be better and better? God isn’t looking for us to become performance oriented. We only need receive what He has to offer us.
